Conterno-Fantino Barolo Vigna del Gris 2009

SKU 05165

Very deep color, ruby to garnet, rich, fruity and persistent bouquet of rose petals, brushwood and berries - particularly blackberries; full-bodied, luscious, round and mellow, with an ideal balance of acidity and tannins. Wonderful with meat-based second courses and seasoned cheeses; the producer suggests pairing it with a typical Piedmontese dish called cacciatora chicken.

Wine AdvocateThe 2009 Barolo Vigna del Gris is a beautiful expression of Nebbiolo that will require many years of cellar aging to find its legs. Now in its infancy, it shows oak-driven notes of spice, cigar box and toast, but there's enough red berry, tar, licorice and mint at the back to count on steady integration in the future. Like all three Barolos presented here, this wine shows impressive depth and structure. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

Wine SpectatorFresh and expressive, boasting cherry, menthol, leather and spice flavors, married to a firm, well-integrated structure. Stays balanced and persistent through the long, savory aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2029.

Wine EnthusiastOak, roasted coffee bean and coconut aromas lead the nose. The palate offers dried black cherry, exotic spice, oak extract and espresso alongside astringent wood tannins that dry out the mouth. There's not quite enough fruit richness to stand up to the oak.
