Hahn Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay 2012
The Hahn SLH Estate Chardonnay shows aromas of baked green apples and lemon grass, underscored by tropical notes of pineapple and lychee. A broad, silky mouthfeel carries through to the finish where light notes of butter toffee and vanilla balance the bright fruit flavors on the mid palate. The grapes for this Chardonnay were harvested by hand from three blocks in Hahn's Lone Oak vineyard between October 18th and 22nd. The characteristically cool, foggy conditions of this Santa Lucia Highland's vineyard allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving natural acidity while the grapes developed additional layers of flavor. The grapes were then gently whole cluster pressed to avoid extracting the harsh flavors from the stems and cold settled. After settling, the clarified juice was transferred to a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels for fermentation where it was aged on its lees for 8 months. The modest use of new oak barrels contributed a light spicy quality, complementing the fruit forward character of the wine. While in barrel, the wine was gently stirred every three weeks, contributing a note of richness to the wine, balancing its natural citrus and tropical fruit character.
